You are not the only one who is asking himself: Who is Aubra Graves?
Nobody knew Aubra Graves until 2009 when his son uploaded on youtube some videos of Aubra playing over Aebersold Playalong records. Even today very few informations about him are available over internet.
We only know that Aubra Graves is a 90 years old tenor saxophone player
from Waco Texas.
He has an amazing big fat tenor sound and he is an incredible ballad player.
SO IF YOU DON'T KNOW HIM YOU'D BETTER CHECK HIM OUT
There is a long thread about him at "Sax On The Web" forum (link here) and a facebook page called "Fans of Aubra Graves" (link here)

Unknown tenor, not too a good handle, because one listen and you will never forget the playing style. That is if you can hear :) I would call Aubra, " Perfacktone Tenor," like the stencil horns by Conn :)
ReplyDeleteGreat sound and great ideas! I'm so glad I found you. You are a true artist! Howard, a fellow sax player
ReplyDeleteVery soothing and an inspiration for all.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful tenor sound. Just this morning I found a video of Aubra playing "You Go To My Head" on alto. Just amazing!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqD9NhRbD8w
ReplyDeleteyes, I discovered Aubra Graves too on YOutube. I play his rendition of Billy Holiday's "You go To my Head" by Graves at least 10 times a day - or more. I have listened to many sax players but his phrasing is absolutely breathtaking on this clip. Masterclass!!!!!
DeleteExcellent
